The
Riviera dei Fiori is a destination that fully maintains the promises of its name: the area, in fact, represents the triumph of the Mediterranean, a mosaic of Impressionist landscapes bursting in light and colours. Through time, the magic of the places has been celebrated by international literates and artists such as Claude Monet, who fell in love with the luminosity of coastal resorts and medieval borghi.
The best entry to the Riviera dei Fiori is from
Sanremo, a 60,000 inhabitants town boasting a glorious tradition in hospitality.
Thanks to its geographical tradition, it represents the 365 days a year tourist destination par excellence: mild temperatures are in fact the norm also in Winter in a setting blessed by fine weather.
Enjoy San Remo in the Spring time, when everything blossoms and brightens up and holiday rhythms are far more relaxed than during the Summer high season. Or in Autumn, when woods and hills turn to orange during the vendemmia season (not to forget about mushrooms…). Explore the town in its most secluded corners and discover its genuine spirit, so coastal and Ligurian, in a kaleidoscope of moments- the market, the Pigna, the villas, the boats, the flowers…
A place for all seasons, San Remo is an elegant and charming town, offering a thousand surprises and opportunities.
A destination of late-19th century English, German and Russian élite tourism, it soon achieved the international repute of an exclusive city fit for the loisir of the European aristocracy.
The starting point of your tour cannot but be the central Casinò Municipale, the true symbol of
San Remo. Its candid façade displays geometrical architectonic lines as well as elaborate decorations, while the interior is the reign of elegance and luxury where gamblers ask luck to be a lady.
A few minutes walk reaches the Russian Orthodox Church of Cristo Salvatore. Following the suggestion of czarina Maria Alexanrovna, it was built to meet the spiritual needs of the large Russian community who lived in the Riviera. Its polychrome domes glittering in the sun possess the exotic charms of faraway countries.
On strolling along Corso Matteotti, the street of shopping, you will catch a
sight of the Ariston Theatre, seat of
the famous Festival della canzone
italiana – definitely the city’s
landmark. Each February,
Sanremo turns
into the capital of Italian pop songs,
roads, hotels and cafés crowded with
artists, agents, journalists and
celebrity hunters.
The glamorous traces of fin de siècle tourism show in a multitude of elegant villas surrounded by luxuriant gardens: Villa Angerer and its beautiful windows, neo-renaissance Villa Ormond and its Japanese gardens, Villa Nobel, where notorious Alfred spent the last years of his life.
The many faces of San Remo area a joy to discover. A stroll around the Pigna district unravels the charm of the city’s historical heart, carruggi, stairways and piazzette climbing their way up to the hill’s top. A diversion to the Santuario di Nostra Signora della Costa offers the treasure of religious art masterworks (wooden sculptures by Maragliano and paintings by Procaccini and Fiasella).
The entroterra of San Remo is traversed by a system of roads and trails that facilitate your contact with nature and landscape - Mediterranean settings at their best. From the intense blue of the coast to the gentleness of the verdant hills, the sign of man discreetly fits in an explosion of colours and scents.
